Mentoring the Next Generation: Why I Love Guiding Emerging Lyricists

One of the greatest joys in my career has become something I never expected: mentoring new and starting lyricists. After years of learning, collaborating, and finding my own voice, I now love passing on what I’ve discovered — not to shape others in my image, but to help them discover and strengthen their own unique style.

I remember how it felt to be at the beginning, full of passion, yet unsure if my words were “good enough,” wondering how to make lyrics sing naturally with a melody, or how to express deep emotions without falling into clichés. That’s why I approach mentoring with an open heart and no judgment. Everyone has to find their own path, their own voice.

A lyric doesn’t have to match my personal taste to be valuable. Something might not be to my liking, perhaps it’s bolder, softer, darker, or more playful than I would write,  but that doesn’t make it bad. It just makes it different. And different is beautiful, because it comes from the writer’s own feelings, experiences, and truth. My role isn’t to criticise or reshape someone into “my” style; it’s to listen, encourage, and offer gentle tools that help them express what’s already inside them more clearly and confidently.

Whether it’s suggesting ways to match stresses with melody, exploring fresh images instead of tired phrases, or simply reminding them that vulnerability is strength, I share what I’ve learned while always honouring their individuality. Some writers love vivid storytelling, others prefer simple, heartfelt repetition; some lean into Schlager joy, others into introspective ballads. All of it is valid. All of it deserves space.

Seeing an upcoming lyricist’s eyes light up when they realise their words truly sing, or when they gain the courage to share a deeply personal line, those moments fill my heart more than any of my own successes. Mentoring reminds me why I fell in love with lyrics in the first place: because words in music can make someone feel seen, understood, and less alone.

If you’re a starting lyricist looking for kind, constructive feedback, or if you’re further along and just want a supportive sounding board,  my door is always open. Let’s celebrate your voice, exactly as it is. ♡

Mit Liebe und Lyrics,
Evelin Vordermeier ♡
